ITINERARY

The Arioso fountain, starting point of the route, is along the road that goes up to Castelmezzano from Basento River, 3 km away from the town of Castelmezzano.Going south-west, you pass through a narrow valley signed by a stream and then next to an imposing rocky cliff. After almost 700 meters, you enter a short rotation coppice wood with a huge presence of hornbeam. The slope here becomes more challenging and after 1 km from the start, the path moves North-East for 500 meters extra, to reach the top of the route, located at over 1.000 meters of altitude. From the top, it is possible to observe the deep valley excavated by stream Acquarra, built-in the steep walls of the Dolomiti Lucane of Castelmezzano, where there are traces of an ancient human presence: here Man cultivated small gardens, built shacks, created restful meditation edges.

After a short deviation, you come back following the irregular line of the ridge. After 1.5 km walk, go down along the ridge for another kilometre: the path crosses shrub pastures and portions of wood, bordering the road leading to Castelmezzano, until it reaches the fountain of the start and the picnic area.
