How to plan your excursions
The paths of the Park have been traced and made to be traveled by everyone, experts in hiking and lovers of Sunday walks; only in some cases it is not recommended to travel to inexperienced or insufficiently trained people. Studying well the indications provided by the guide and the map for each path, you can plan full-day excursions, multi-day trekking with overnight stay in the inhabited centres or in the Park's accommodation facilities (see the "Useful Addresses" section), or a simple walk of a few hours.
Recommended period for the visit
Spring with its blooms and warm-coloured autumn are the best seasons for visiting the Park; temperatures in this period are mild, the sky is usually clear and allows you to see distant landscapes. In summer, however, you can appreciate and enjoy the coolness of the woods in the upper part of the park, like the Montepiano forest. In this period, it is a good idea to plan excursions using the coolest hours of the morning and using the hottest hours of the day to stop in the cool shade of the forest. In winter, you can make beautiful excursions, especially in the lower part of the Park bordered by the river Basento.
Signage
All paths are marked with a three-digit number and can be consulted in the ITINERARI DEL PARCO section. The route of each path is highlighted with a red-white-red trail that shows the number of the path you are going through; between two signals of this type you will find a white and red horizontal strip that will show you that you are on the right path. Directional signs indicate deviations and crossings with other paths.

Horse riding
The lovers of equestrian tourism will find in the Park the ideal place to organize pleasant trekking; in the locality of Caserma Cognato there is a structure equipped for equestrian tourism and by contacting the local farms directly, the "stopping places" can certainly be found where to admit the horses for the night.
Mountain bike rides
All the itineraries presented are practicable on mountain bikes with varying degrees of difficulty: from routes on asphalted roads, to those on dirt roads with steep slopes, to those practicable for some stretches on foot. In the practice of Mountain biking, you cannot improvise and those who believe that with a mountain bike you can overcome prohibitive slopes with minimum effort are wrong: by bike you "ride" and you need to be trained for long distances and steep slopes, as well as having a minimum of familiarity with the use of gear ratios. Therefore remember:
- avoid improvising "mountain bikers" if you are not trained to travel at least 20 - 30 km with a difference in altitude of 300 - 400 in;
- driving on dirt roads requires a certain skill to avoid unpleasant falls;
- the gravel roads with clay bottom become slippery and impracticable even after short rains;
- you must be able to repair the bike yourself:
it is therefore necessary to always carry the necessary tools and, for the easily worn and breakable parts, the spare parts.
Bike rides
Cycle touring bikes are much more delicate than mountain bikes and, therefore, not very suitable for dirt tracks. For this reason, the cycle touring routes take place entirely on paved roads that, in some cases, can have steep slopes or situations of instability such as holes or landslides.
Trips by car
Drivers visiting the Park should be advised: -the recommended routes are provincial and municipal roads with narrow carriageway, on which it is important to drive at moderate speed and with great care;
- on the same roads also cyclists circulate, to whom it is correct to give precedence;
- it is absolutely forbidden to cross the forest tracks, even if they have a road surface suitable for cars;
- never park the car on the lawns.
